Xinan, a vibrant subdistrict nestled within this historic city, holds a story as rich and layered as the silk that once flowed through its ancient port. Xinan, as part of Guangzhou, has witnessed the ebb and flow of empires, trade, and cultural exchange. Let’s step back in time to the Xi (Western) Zhou dynasty (1146–771 BCE), when the area we know as Xinan was part of a region called Chuting. The Baiyue people, the earliest known inhabitants, lived here and pledged allegiance to the state of Chu. Much later, during the Qin dynasty (221–207 BCE), the small city of Panyu, named for the twin hills of Pan and Yu, became the capital of Nanhai prefecture. This marked Xinan’s, and Guangzhou’s, integration into the growing Chinese empire. As Guangzhou prospered, so did Xinan. Under the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), Guangzhou, including Xinan, experienced a golden age of peace and prosperity. It became a vital trading port. Arab and Hindu traders brought their goods and cultures, enriching the city’s tapestry. Buddhist temples sprung up, adding to the spiritual landscape. Xinan, along with the rest of Guangzhou, faced turbulent times during the decline of the Tang dynasty. Yet, it continued to evolve and grow. Xinan in Guangzhou sits on the Pearl River. This river, the fourth largest in China, has been Xinan’s, and Guangzhou’s, lifeline for centuries. It connected the city to the world, bringing traders and travelers to its shores. Today, as you stand in Xinan, you can still feel the pulse of this historic waterway. The name Guangzhou first appeared in 226 CE. It became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Guangdong and Guangxi in 1746. This administrative importance cemented the city’s role as a regional hub, influencing the surrounding areas, including Xinan. Over the centuries, Xinan’s fate has been intertwined with Guangzhou’s.
