Have you ever felt the rush of wind beneath your feet? The Xiiniupi Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a gateway. A connector between Shenzhen and Zhongshan. This magnificent structure is part of the larger Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. A 49.7 kilometer marvel of engineering. It’s a bridge-tunnel system. This means a portion of it runs under the water. Clever right?
The Xiiniupi Bridge wasn’t always a reality. For years Shenzhen pushed to be included in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. Their vision? A double-Y-shaped design. Sadly a single-Y design was chosen. This left Shenzhen out. But Shenzhen didn’t give up. They envisioned a separate link. A bridge to connect them with Zhongshan. This idea finally took shape in 2008.
Construction began in May 2017. It finished in 2024. The total cost was a staggering US$4.83 billion. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link isn’t just one bridge. It consists of multiple bridges and tunnels. It also features two artificial islands. The longest continuous bridge section is approximately 22.5 kilometers. Fifteen point five of those kilometers are above sea level. Impressive is it not?
The Xiiniupi Bridge is part of this immense project. It carries eight lanes of the G2518 Shenzhen-Cenxi Expressway. Imagine the sheer volume of vehicles that cross daily. It cuts travel time dramatically. The journey from Shenzhen to Zhongshan now takes less than 30 minutes. Before it took two hours.
On June 30 2024 the bridge opened. Shenzhen created inter-city bus lines. Connecting them to Zhongshan was now a breeze. Yet the early days were filled with congestion. Drivers and passengers experienced delays. Some even took the longer route via the Humen Bridge. Despite initial hiccups the bridge rapidly became a crucial transportation artery.
Today the Xiiniupi Bridge hums with activity. A testament to human ingenuity and determination. This is more than just a passageway. It symbolizes Shenzhen’s unwavering spirit.
