“A bridge collapsed!” That’s what many people were saying about a bridge in Beijing. Not just any bridge, but the Xiaoqinghe Bridge. This event underscores the power of nature. It also highlights the challenges of urban infrastructure in the face of extreme weather.
We are standing near where the Xihuangcun Bridge is, not far from where the Xiaoqinghe Bridge once stood. It collapsed after Beijing experienced its heaviest rainfall in over a century. The date was August 3rd. The news of the collapse spread quickly.
The Xiaoqinghe Bridge was located west of the historic Lugou Bridge. The rainfall caused water flow exceeding the bridge’s design capacity. An expert confirmed that the flooding was to blame. The flood control authority reported that the Yongding River’s waters surged. Upstream floodgates opened making things worse. This led to a pier of the Xiaoqinghe Bridge breaking. Five cars tumbled into the river below.
A local resident near the Xiaoqinghe Bridge described the scene. The resident said the water levels are normally low. Sometimes the riverbed is even visible. But on July 31st, the flood raged fiercely. It was something they had never witnessed before.
The Xiaoqinghe Bridge was 160 meters long. It spanned the Xiaoqing River. This river serves as a flood diversion for the Yongding River during flood season.
Interestingly, the Xiaoqinghe Bridge had undergone an overhaul recently. Beijing’s city transport commission required reinforcement work. This included adding steel plate ribs. Extra steel plates were added for support. The pavement was relayed. Beijing Xihai Municipal Construction Engineering won the bid. The project cost about CNY3.1 million. That is USD431000.
Despite the recent revamp, the bridge couldn’t withstand the extreme flooding. A professor at Hohai University, Luan Qinghua, commented on the collapse. He said the flooding’s scale surpassed the bridge’s design limits. This was the primary reason for the collapse.
Since the heavy rainfalls, the water levels of the Yongding River reached 3750 cubic meters per second. This was according to the Beijing Water Authority. The Xihuangcun Bridge stands as a reminder. We must build infrastructure to endure the forces of nature. We also need to remember the importance of maintaining and upgrading existing structures.
