High above Guilin the Xiaoyao Tower stands tall. It has witnessed centuries of history. This magnificent tower wasn’t always here. It’s been rebuilt many times. Originally constructed in 621 AD during the Tang Dynasty. Governor Li Jing oversaw its creation. It was part of Guizhou City’s eastern defenses. A stone inscription by Yan Zhenqing solidified its name. Xiaoyao Tower translates to Tower of Unrestrained Joy.

For centuries scholars and artists sought inspiration at Xiaoyao Tower. They climbed its heights. They wrote poems and painted landscapes. They feasted and celebrated. The tower served as a landmark. A symbol for those entering Guilin from the Central Plains. Even frustrated officials found solace in its presence. Xiaoyao Tower has seen joy and sorrow.

Unfortunately the Xiaoyao Tower suffered damage. It faced destruction throughout various eras. The Song Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties all saw renovations or repairs. During the War of Resistance Against Japan it was completely destroyed. Its stones were even reused to build a bridge. The Xiaoyao Tower’s inscription was saved. It was moved to Qixing Park’s Putuo Mountain. It even survived the Cultural Revolution although the inscription was damaged and later restored.

Finally in 2014 the decision was made. The city government would rebuild Xiaoyao Tower. It was deemed vital to Guilin’s cultural identity. The reconstructed tower is near its original location. It stands proudly in a Tang Dynasty style. Its reconstruction was completed in 2015. It was a year-long project. Today Xiaoyao Tower stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to Guilin’s rich history and culture. Come and experience the breathtaking views. Enjoy the legacy of the Xiaoyao Tower.
