“Did you hear the one about the bridge that couldn’t handle a once-in-a-century flood?” Well, that’s the story of the Xiaocun Bridge. We are standing before a testament to both engineering and the raw power of nature.

The Xiaocun Bridge, or what’s left of it, has a story etched in its very foundations. It involves record-breaking rainfall and a dramatic collapse. This bridge isn’t just any crossing. The Xiaocun Bridge spans the Xiaoqing River. This waterway acts as a flood diversion for the Yongding River during those intense rainy seasons.

Now, let’s jump back to the summer. Beijing experienced its heaviest rainfall in 140 years. The Yongding River swelled. Upstream floodgates opened. The surge became too much for the Xiaoqinghe Bridge to bear. One of its piers gave way. Five cars tumbled into the raging river.

The Xiaoqinghe Bridge is about 160 meters long. It had undergone an overhaul not long before the collapse. The project aimed to reinforce its main beams and relay the pavement. Beijing Xihai Municipal Construction Engineering won the bid for about CNY3.1 million. That’s roughly USD431,000.

Despite the recent work, experts say the bridge’s collapse was due to the sheer volume of water. Professor Luan Qinghua of Hohai University explained that the flooding’s magnitude exceeded the bridge’s design capacity. The Yongding River’s water levels reached a staggering 3,750 cubic meters per second.

A resident near the Xiaoqing River said the water levels are usually low. Sometimes the riverbed is even visible. But on that fateful day, the waters surged with unprecedented ferocity. The collapse of the Xiaoqinghe Bridge serves as a stark reminder of nature’s force. It highlights the importance of resilient infrastructure.

So, the next time you cross a bridge, remember the story of the Xiaocun Bridge. It is a story of a bridge beaten by the elements. A tale of unexpected disaster.
