“Imagine a drive that once took two hours now completed in under 30 minutes.” That’s the promise kept by the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. I will tell you a story about this bridge. More specifically about the Xianhu 2# Bridge. It is a crucial part of this innovative bridge-tunnel system.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is no ordinary project. It is a 49.7-kilometer marvel connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan. These are two major cities on China’s Pearl River Delta. Think of it as a modern Silk Road. It is designed to boost connectivity. It is a core transportation project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Construction began in May 2017. It opened to traffic on June 30, 2024. The project cost around US$4.83 billion. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link includes a 6.7 km tunnel and 19 bridges. The longest continuous bridge section spans approximately 22.5 km. About 15.5 km of this stretches above the sea.

The Xianhu 2# Bridge plays a vital role. It helps to integrate this vast network of roads. This ensures a smooth flow of traffic. The entire link has four lanes in each direction. The maximum speed is 100 km/h. It connects the Guangshen Expressway to the south of Shenzhen Airport. It also joins the Jihe Expressway to the east of the airport. On the western side it meets the Zhongjiang Expressway.

Shenzhen initially wanted to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. But China chose a single-Y design in 2004. This excluded Shenzhen. The idea for the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link emerged in 2008. Concerns it might undermine the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge delayed it. It was included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan in 2011.

This bridge isn’t just about reducing travel time. It also showcases impressive engineering. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge has the world’s largest span. It has a fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge at 1,666 meters. The bridge deck stands at 91 meters. It also has the highest navigation clearance for a sea bridge.

In its first month, over 3 million vehicles crossed the link. This shows its importance. It has quickly become an essential route for travelers and businesses.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link faced many challenges. One challenge was building a suspension bridge 15 kilometers offshore. Another was millimeter-level precision when docking immersed tubes. These tubes weighed about 80,000 metric tons each. They were placed 40 meters deep. The team also had to create an island in less than six months. This island was equivalent to 19 international football fields.

Innovative technologies were crucial. The team adopted 3D printing. This helped them develop a customized intelligent pouring system. This saved 2,500 hours of machinery time.

Protecting the marine environment was also a priority. During trench excavation, workers found decomposed rocks. Instead of blasting, they used a precise mechanical rock-breaking technique. This cost an extra 30 million yuan. It took over a year. But it minimized the impact on the Chinese white dolphin’s habitat.

The Xianhu 2# Bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It shows our commitment to progress and sustainability. As you stand here, think about the blend of innovation. Think about the environmental care that makes this link a true wonder. It is more than just a bridge. It is a connection to the future.
