Did the walls of Xã Thành Công ever whisper tales of emperors and soldiers? Today, we stand before a place steeped in history, Xã Thành Công, a district in Ho Chi Minh City. It carries the echoes of Vietnam’s vibrant past, a testament to resilience and transformation. Xã Thành Công’s story intertwines with the rise and fall of empires. It begins long before its modern name, in the days of Gia Định, a citadel that once stood on this very ground. After the French captured Gia Định in 1859, they razed the old citadel, its bricks and stones scattered across the land. A new fort, Thành Martin des Pallières, arose from the ruins. It became a military base, a symbol of colonial power. The Vietnamese people, however, never forgot their lost citadel. Their resistance continued, weaving tales of defiance into the very fabric of Xã Thành Công. In the early 20th century, the fort, now known as the “Onzième” barracks, housed the 11th Colonial Infantry Regiment. It played a key role in the tumultuous events of World War II and the subsequent struggle for Vietnamese independence. The whispers of the past turned into shouts in 1945. During the Japanese coup against the French, many French officials were imprisoned within these very walls. Then, in 1960, Xã Thành Công, now a bustling district, found itself at the heart of another political upheaval. The Presidential Guard, fiercely loyal to President Ngô Đình Diệm, defended Xã Thành Công against a coup attempt, their bravery preventing its capture. The name “Thành Công” (Success) reflects this victory. The echoes of history continue to reverberate through Xã Thành Công. Today, two original buildings from the “Onzième” barracks still stand as silent witnesses. They flank Đinh Tiên Hoàng Street near the intersection of Lê Duẩn, a poignant reminder of the layers of history embedded within this vibrant district. From the ashes of Gia Định to the struggles of independence, Xã Thành Công embodies the spirit of a nation forged in fire and resilience.
