“Is this where the Mekong Delta truly begins?” someone in our group asks, peering at the river with a curious gaze. We are standing at the edge of Xã Tân An, a gateway to the vast, intricate network of waterways that define the Mekong Delta. Xã Tân An is a commune located in Vĩnh Cửu District, Đồng Nai Province, part of the southeastern region of Vietnam. Its significance lies not only in its geographical position but also in its historical ties to the development of the delta. During the 18th century, the Nguyen Dynasty recognized the region’s potential as a trade hub. The mighty Mekong, with its tributaries, offered a natural highway for commerce. Xã Tân An, situated by the river, naturally became a focal point for trade and transportation. The region witnessed the rise of bustling markets and the arrival of traders from far and wide. Over time, Xã Tân An and the surrounding areas flourished, becoming a vital region contributing to the prosperity of the Mekong Delta. Our journey today takes us through a landscape that speaks volumes about this rich past.
