Whispers of history cling to the very air here in Tan An. Before you stands the heart of Long An Province a city steeped in centuries of river trade and wartime echoes.

Tan An wasn’t always a city. Its beginnings trace back to 1705. The strategic management of the Mekong Delta’s rivers brought commerce to the Vam Co Tay River. This river flowed right through Tan An then known as New An. It became the terminus for the Bao Dinh Canal. This marked the end of a vital waterway. This waterway connected the Tien River at My Tho to the Vam Co Tay. This pivotal moment launched Tan An on its path to prosperity. The entire Mekong Delta fell under the Nguyen Dynasty’s control around 1800. Tan An and its environs even briefly existed as their own province during French colonial rule from December 1889. This was a short period after Gia Dinh Province was divided. However this independent status was short-lived. In 1956 the Republic of Vietnam under President Ngo Dinh Diem merged Tan An Province into Long An Province.

The Vietnam War left an indelible mark on Tan An. It served as headquarters for the US Army’s 9th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade. The division was the southernmost in the Delta. One part of town housed the brigade’s headquarters. The other side held Tan An air base. This base supported the division’s helicopters and could handle medium-sized propeller planes. When the 9th Division departed in 1970. the base was handed over to the South Vietnamese Army. The 9th Division was the first infantry division to leave Vietnam.

Tan An’s significance extends beyond its wartime role. It’s a crucial agricultural hub. Its location along the Vam Co Tay River makes it a vital transportation link. This position facilitated the movement of goods to and from Ho Chi Minh City. The city continues to thrive. It has attracted significant foreign investment. This investment fueled the growth of industrial parks. These parks produce goods for export around the world.

The city boasts a rich cultural heritage. Its location in the Mekong Delta has long influenced its culture. Various ethnic groups have inhabited the area for millennia. The Khmer people have had a powerful cultural impact. This influence shaped Tan An and its traditions. The city also holds numerous historical sites and landmarks. These showcase Tan An’s unique blend of history and culture. These sites offer a captivating glimpse into the province’s past and present. Tan An’s story is a vibrant tapestry woven from trade war and the enduring spirit of its people. A story that continues to unfold along the banks of the Vam Co Tay.
