Before 1 September 2024 Xa My Loc was a district. It was part of Nam Dinh province. Xa My Loc is now part of Nam Dinh city. This happened as part of a larger administrative restructuring. The area has a rich history. It played an important role in various conflicts. The people of Xa My Loc showed great resilience. They fought bravely for their nation.

There were shifts between being part of Nam Ha province and Nam Dinh province. There was restructuring into Nam Dinh City. There was also the creation of Ha Nam Ninh province. This later split into Ha Nam and Ninh Binh provinces.
