Did you know Wynnum’s name might come from an Aboriginal word? It could mean pandanus palm or mud crab. Imagine the ancient Quandamooka people. They lived here for over 25000 years. They fished hunted and thrived along Wynnum’s shores. Their connection to this land remains strong.

Wynnum sits on Moreton Bay a beautiful coastal suburb in Brisbane. Its coastline jetty and wading pool are very popular. In 2021 Wynnum had over 14000 people. Wynnum and nearby Manly were once known as twin towns. Think of that. Two bustling communities sharing a history a shoreline a destiny.

European settlement started slowly. It really picked up speed when the railway arrived in the late 1880s. Land sales followed. The Wynnum Station Estate auctioned 95 allotments in 1890. The area developed rapidly. New homes schools and businesses sprung up. A Wesleyan Methodist church was opened in 1890 Wynnum’s first.

But this land was not empty. Aboriginal people were already here. They helped build the first jetty in the 1850s. Three Aboriginal men even saved three European women from drowning in Wynnum Creek in 1886. Tragically there were also conflicts between the Aboriginal inhabitants and the European settlers.

Imagine the stories these places could tell. The former Methodist church on Ashton Street. It was built by John Iley Green. The building became a home in 1990. It’s now on the Brisbane Heritage Register. Or St Peter’s Anglican Church. Its foundation stone was laid in 1896. Wynnum State School opened in 1896 too. It later merged with other schools to become the Wynnum State School we know today.

Wynnum wasn’t always part of Brisbane. It was its own shire then a municipality. It elected its own mayor. Black’s Camp the Aboriginal camp was disbanded in 1908. It became Elanora Park in the 1930s. The Wynnum Town Council joined Brisbane in 1925. A significant change. The area transformed from a small settlement to a busy suburb of a growing city.

But Wynnum’s character remains. Its coastal charm. Its history etched into its streets and buildings. Its people’s stories woven into the fabric of this unique place. The sounds of the waves the salty air the laughter of children playing on Pandanus Beach. These are all part of Wynnum’s rich tapestry. It’s a place where the past meets the present. A place to discover. A place to remember.
