“The Imperial Playhouse? What an interesting name for a school hall,” you might think. You’re right here at Wynnum State High School, and it’s not your average school. Opened in 1942, Wynnum State High School has a rich history interwoven with the community it serves. Wynnum State High School’s story began long before its official opening. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Bayside District, while growing, lacked a local high school. Students had to travel all the way to Central Brisbane for their secondary education. After years of advocacy and planning, construction finally started in 1941. Interestingly, as part of the “Schools of Tomorrow” refurbishment, Wynnum State High School incorporated names from local history into its buildings. That’s how the hall got its theatrical name – a nod to Wynnum’s own Imperial Theatre. The school’s motto, “We’re Wynnum, We’re Proud,” reflects the strong sense of community here. Wynnum State High School isn’t just a place of learning, it’s a reflection of the area’s past and a source of pride for its residents.
