“It looks like a house, doesn’t it?” a voice cuts through the murmuring of the group. You are standing in front of the Wynnum Fire and Rescue Station, a two-storey heritage-listed building. It was built in 1938. This building is a reminder of a time when fire stations doubled as homes for firefighters and their families. This combination of station and residence was common in Brisbane, with stations like Yeronga, Coorparoo, Nundah, and Hamilton following the same model. The station was operational until 2004, when it was replaced by a new facility. Today, it stands as a testament to the history of firefighting in Wynnum. The building has a unique design that incorporated the family home on the top floor. The ground floor housed the fire station’s operational facilities, including the engine room, watch office, locker room, ablutions area, dormitory, kitchen, laundry, and a duty officer’s bedroom. Even the iconic firefighter’s pole linked the station to the superintendent’s residence above. Imagine the sound of that pole sliding down as a firefighter raced into action, a sudden burst of adrenaline, a rush of responsibility. Wynnum Fire and Rescue Station is a reminder of a simpler time when our community was intertwined with the lives of its protectors.
