Can you hear the whispers of history? Here at the Wumiao, also known as the Temple of Marquis Wu, the echoes of the Three Kingdoms period resonate through the centuries. Wumiao in Chengdu isn’t just a temple; it’s a living testament to the legacy of two of China’s most iconic figures: Liu Bei, the first emperor of the Shu Kingdom, and his brilliant strategist, Zhuge Liang. Built in 223 AD, Wumiao initially served as both Liu Bei’s tomb, the Hui Tomb, and a shrine, the Hanzhaolie Temple. Later, a separate temple was erected near Liu Bei’s mausoleum to honor Zhuge Liang, who died in 234 AD. Because Zhuge Liang held the title of “Wu Xiang Hou” (Marquis Wu), this temple became known as Wumiao. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, these three distinct sites merged into the singular Wumiao complex we see today. Wumiao is unique as it is the only temple in China where an emperor and his minister are enshrined together. Step through the front gate of Wumiao, beneath the inscription “Han Zhao Lie Miao,” meaning the Temple of Liu Bei. Inside, the vivid statues of the Three Kingdoms’ key players seem to watch you, their colorful costumes a testament to the Qing Dynasty’s Emperor Kangxi’s admiration for Zhuge Liang. He ordered the temple’s reconstruction, ensuring the vibrancy we witness today. In the Liu Bei Temple, gaze upon the imposing 3-meter high golden statue of the emperor, his regalia a symbol of his power. Nearby, statues of his sworn brothers, the formidable generals Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, stand guard. Deeper within Wumiao lies the heart of the complex, the hall dedicated to Zhuge Liang. Here, the strategist’s statue holds his iconic feather fan, his expression capturing his wisdom and loyalty. The very pillars of this hall bear inscriptions from Zhuge Liang’s writings, offering timeless advice to his son. Remember the Sanyi Temple, dedicated to the unbreakable bond between Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, their clay sculptures a poignant reminder of their brotherhood. Beyond the temples and halls, lose yourself in Wumiao’s tranquil gardens. The vibrant azaleas, ancient cypresses, and the gentle murmur of streams create a peaceful escape. Finally, pay your respects at the Hui Ling, Liu Bei’s mausoleum, a serene mound covered in lush greenery. This place, chosen by Zhuge Liang himself, embodies Liu Bei’s love for his people, forever linking these two great figures within the walls of Wumiao.
