Gazing up at these colossal boots, wouldn’t you agree they’re a sight to behold? The World’s Largest Cowboy Boots. They’re not just big, they’re record-breaking. These boots stand a staggering 35 feet, three inches tall. They’re 30 feet long and nine feet wide. They’re made of tubular steel and polyurethane foam, weighing a hefty 10,000 pounds. Now, these boots have a story to tell. A story that begins not here in San Antonio, but in Washington, D.C.. In 1979, Austin-based artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade was commissioned to create a Texas-themed sculpture. The World’s Largest Cowboy Boots were originally displayed near the White House. They became an instant hit. A bidding war erupted to bring these boots back to Texas. North Star Mall, owned by the Rouse Company, won the bid for $20,000. Transporting these giant boots was a feat in itself. They were too high, too wide, and too long. They even got stuck under an overpass. The drivers had to resort to back roads to get them to San Antonio. Wade even wrote a song about the ordeal, titled “Too High, Too Wide and Too Long.” Finally, in January 1980, the World’s Largest Cowboy Boots arrived at North Star Mall. They’ve been a San Antonio landmark ever since. They even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Over the years, these boots have witnessed countless proposals, photos, and even commercials. They’ve become a symbol of Texas and its larger-than-life spirit. Daddy-O Wade, the artist behind these magnificent boots, sadly passed away in December 2020 at age 76. He created many other large sculptures, including a 40-foot iguana at the Fort Worth Zoo. But these boots held a special place in his heart. They were his favorite, a testament to his love for Texas. So, the next time you’re at North Star Mall, take a moment to admire the World’s Largest Cowboy Boots. They’re not just a quirky roadside attraction. They are a piece of art, a piece of Texas history.
