Gazing at the Han River, can you believe the World Cup Bridge almost didn’t happen? Construction started in March 2010. It was meant to be done by August 2015. But budget cuts slowed everything down.

The World Cup Bridge connects Mapo District and Yeongdeungpo District. This bridge is more than just concrete and steel.

Finally, the main part opened on September 1, 2021. The entire bridge was completed on December 29, 2023. Two ramps on the southern end opened then. Now traffic flows smoothly. The Seobu Expressway connects easily to Mapo District because of the World Cup Bridge.

But there is more to the World Cup Bridge than its practical purpose. It is a sight to behold. The bridge stretches 1,980 meters long and 31.4 meters wide. It links Sangam-dong, Yeomchang-dong, and Yangpyeong-dong. This is the first asymmetric composite bridge on the Han River.

Its design symbolizes the 10-story stone pagoda of the Wongaksa Temple Site. That temple is Korea’s National Treasure No. 2.

At night, the World Cup Bridge transforms. The lighting design represents a string of light. It plays the music of light. An LED system makes this possible. It uses energy efficiently. It also controls light distribution well. Maintenance costs are low.

Color Kinetics LED lighting illuminates the bridge. ColorReach Powercore lights the 100-meter-high tower and the main bridge surface. The tower lighting adds structural volume to the design.

More Reach Powercore lights throw colorful light onto the pier below. The lights are mounted to the back of the girders. Color Kinetics Light System Manager controls the entire system.

Seungmoon Jeong is the CEO of Sejeon Lighting. He said the World Cup Bridge has become a symbolic bridge. It attracts public attention for its beauty and symbolism. It represents the new Seoul.

Oh, and did you know BTS performed “Butter” here? It was for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 14, 2021. Imagine the energy. They took over the entire World Cup Bridge. This iconic performance cemented the bridge’s place in pop culture history.

The World Cup Bridge stands as a testament to perseverance. It is a symbol of modern Seoul. Next time you cross it, remember its story. Think about the vision and the music of light.
