Remember how Seoul’s World Cup Park emerged from trash to triumph? Today, we stand at the heart of this ecological marvel. It’s a testament to Seoul’s dedication to environmental conservation. The park commemorates the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup.

Before you is the expansive World Cup Park. It spans over 857 acres. Imagine this land as something entirely different. Believe it or not, until 1993, this very spot was Nanjido, a landfill. For fifteen years, it received over 92 million tons of Seoul’s garbage.

Consider how the mountains of waste created dust and odors. Flies were everywhere. It was a major nuisance. Now, breathe in the fresh air and observe the transformation.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government initiated extensive work. They reduced the landfill’s environmental impact. They used waterproof barriers and methane gas collection. The collected gas is burned for heating. Plants and animals have returned.

World Cup Park officially opened on May 1, 2002. It was built in anticipation of the World Cup games. It symbolizes the World Cup, environmental conservation, and humanity’s co-existence with nature.

The park comprises five sub-parks. These are Pyeonghwa Park, Haneul Park, Noeul Park, Nanjicheon Park, and Hangang Riverside Park. Each offers a unique experience.

Pyeonghwa Park, or Peace Park, commemorates the 2002 World Cup. It symbolizes world peace and unity. You can find UNICEF Plaza, Nanji Pond, and the World Cup Park Museum here.

Haneul Park, meaning Sky Park, is World Cup Park’s highest point. Climb the Haneul stairs, all 291 of them. Observation points offer sloping views of the park.

Noeul Park is home to wild animals. Keep an eye out for deer, wildcats, and raccoons. It features a sculpture park with nature and cultural art. These works are displayed on green lawns.

Nanjicheon Park was built along the Nanji Stream. The stream once flowed with sewage. It is now purified. The park offers an outdoor stage and sports facilities.

Hangang Riverside Park sits on the banks of the Han River. It features a soccer field and basketball court. There is also a grass field, a river cruise ship port, and an area for nature studies.

Originally, Nanjido was an islet. Peanuts and millet were cultivated here. It joined the mainland in 1977.

Today, World Cup Park hosts nearly 10 million visitors annually. It’s equipped with conservation facilities. These further revive the diversified ecological system.

Take a moment to reflect on this transformation. From a landfill to an ecological park, World Cup Park embodies Seoul’s spirit. It’s a symbol of renewal and harmony between humanity and nature. Remember this incredible story of rebirth.
