In a time when Queensland was booming with a modern spirit, Wooloowin State School became a symbol of progressive education. This building, standing proudly on Lutwyche Road since 1914, was more than just a school; it was a beacon of the future. Wooloowin State School was a model school, showcasing the best of Queensland’s education system. It was one of the sixth most expensive Queensland public works contracts in 1913-1914! Its design reflected the latest advancements in education, with wide verandahs, a ventilated roof, and classrooms furnished with the most modern two-student desks with tip-up seats. They even had large green blackboards! Imagine students exploring the world through these blackboards and the innovative curriculum. The school was so advanced that it actually became the first primary school in the state to introduce woodwork and domestic science! It was the first primary school in Queensland to provide these subjects, as provided for under the new syllabus provisions of 1915! The school was also a pioneer in promoting sports, especially swimming, with a pool that was built in 1916. They even added a swimming pool! The pool was later enlarged to its current size in 1925. Wooloowin State School played a significant role in the development of Wooloowin. Today, this building stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of the past, serving as a reminder of the enduring importance of education. It is a place where children continue to learn, grow, and thrive, carrying on the legacy of this historic model school.
