Didn’t nine Church of God members once seek a new spiritual home? They established the first Church of God in New York City. It’s called the Church of God of Woodycrest Avenue. This happened in 1934. These founding members resettled from the South. Rev. Elizar Johnson pastored them.
The Woodycrest Church of God congregation first met on 134th Street. It was near Madison Avenue. Later, they moved several times. They relocated to 119th Street and then 129th Street. In 1944, they found a place at 105 West 11th Street in Harlem.
By the mid-1970s, challenges arose. The neighborhood declined and socio-economic conditions worsened. Pastor Charles Marcelle Jr. and the members recognized the need for a new location. They prayed for guidance.
In 1977, their prayers were answered. God blessed them. They purchased the edifice at 923 Woodycrest Avenue in the Bronx. This became their current home. The Church of God of Woodycrest found stability.
August 1980 marked a new chapter. Pastor Milroy A. Grant and his family arrived. They assumed leadership. During his tenure, the church achieved significant milestones. The most memorable was burning the church mortgage in 1986. It was a moment of financial freedom.
In June 2011, Bishop Julian Stephenson became the new pastor. His wife, Dr. Ingrid Stephenson, joined him. Together, they brought a passion for outreach. Woodycrest began reaching out to the Highbridge community. They organized prayer walks and summer block parties. Vacation Bible School and a food pantry were established. The Woodycrest Church of God continues to grow.
The Woodycrest Church of God stands as a beacon of hope. It offers community support. It embodies the spirit of resilience. It continues to serve.
