Gazing across the shimmering expanse of Moreton Bay, can you feel the echoes of history whispering from Woody Point Beach? Woody Point Beach isn’t just sand and surf. It’s a place where time has left its mark, etched in the very grains of the shoreline. Matthew Flinders, the intrepid explorer, first laid eyes on this iron-rich point in 1799, christening it Red Cliff Point. This name later inspired the name for the town of Redcliffe further north. The true heart of Woody Point Beach began to beat in 1882 with the construction of a jetty. This vital link to Sandgate opened up the area to visitors and holiday-makers, who arrived by ferry to enjoy the hospitality of the St Leonards Hotel. Woody Point Beach, however, faced a challenge. The coastline, prone to erosion and mud deposits from the Pine River, couldn’t boast the pristine sands of its northern neighbors. Despite this, Woody Point Beach found its own unique charm. The Great Western Hotel, built in 1883, became a local landmark. The area steadily grew with boarding houses, a school, a butcher, and a store appearing by 1901. The arrival of the Hornibrook Highway in 1935 brought a new wave of visitors to Woody Point Beach. The beach became a popular spot for affordable outings, famous for fish and chips on the foreshore and even camping. Woody Point Beach’s fortunes took a dramatic turn with the arrival of a certain family, the Filmers, who took over the Palace Hotel (formerly the Great Western Hotel) in 1935. Little did they know that their establishment would soon become a pivotal point in music history. In 1959, a young band called the Bee Gees played their first paid gig at the Palace Hotel, right here on the edge of Woody Point Beach. The rest, as they say, is history. Woody Point Beach continued to evolve. Residential development brought apartments and units, and the foreshore received a much-needed facelift. Today, as you stand on Woody Point Beach, you stand on the very spot where history and music intertwined, where a humble beach became a launchpad for legends.
