Incorporated in 1912 Woodsburgh boasts a rich history. It was one of Long Island’s first planned communities. Woodsburgh attracted wealthy New Yorkers seeking summer retreats. Magnificent mansions were built. The Rockaway Hunting Club and The Woodmere Club flourished. These clubs offered hunting fishing boating and other activities. Prominent figures like Henry Ziegler of Steinway Piano fame and William Fox of Fox Film Corporation resided in Woodsburgh. Even legendary personalities like Diamond Jim Brady and Lillian Russell frequented the Woodsburgh Pavilion Hotel.
Woodsburgh while small significantly impacted the development of the Five Towns. This area is usually comprised of Lawrence and Cedarhurst and the hamlets Woodmere and Inwood. The Hewletts are also included. Woodsburgh though technically part of the Five Towns isn’t always included in the count of five. Samuel Wood and Robert Burton were instrumental in its initial development.
Woodsburgh’s growth continued. It remains a serene residential area. In 2020 Woodsburgh’s population reached 897. The median age was 50.9. By 2024 the population slightly decreased to 872 with 429 men and 458 women. The median age stayed at 50.9. The 2000 census showed a population of 831 with a median household income of $185296. This shows Woodsburgh’s continued affluence. The median family income was even higher at $189227. Remarkably poverty was virtually nonexistent.
Today Woodsburgh is served by the Hewlett-Woodmere Union Free School District and the Lawrence Union Free School District. These districts roughly split the village geographically. Residents have access to either the Peninsula Library District or the Hewlett-Woodmere Library District.
