Woodlawn Cemetery opened in 1863 during the Civil War. Back then, this area was part of Yonkers. It later became part of New York City in 1874. This cemetery spans over 400 acres. That is huge.

More than 300,000 people rest here. Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place for many notable figures. You might recognize names like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Madam C.J. Walker. Also, Herman Melville and Celia Cruz are buried here.
Many remains were moved here from other cemeteries in New York City. Graves from Rutgers Street church and West Farms Dutch Reformed Church were relocated here. Even remains from the Dyckman-Nagle Burying Ground found their final resting place in Woodlawn.
