Dreaming of open green spaces right in the heart of Glasgow? Then you’re standing in Woodlands. Woodlands is more than just a place. It is a vibrant area on the north-west edge of the city centre.
Let’s journey back to discover Woodlands’ captivating story. Imagine Glasgow in the early 1600s. The east bank of the River Kelvin bustled with industry. Here stood Glasgow’s first water-driven cotton mill. William Gillespie constructed it in 1790. Bleach and print fields surrounded it. Woodlands was officially incorporated into Glasgow in 1830. It became part of the Blythswood Estate.
Interestingly, Woodlands nearly became the home of Glasgow University. In 1846, there was a plan to move the university here from High Street. The Monklands Junction Railway Company even acquired land for this purpose. However, the plan was abandoned and Gilmorehill was chosen instead in 1870.
Today Woodlands is a diverse community. It has a substantial population of Pakistani and Indian heritage. Many students also call this place home. You will find many 19th-century terraces and townhouses here. Blonde and red sandstone tenements dominate the area. Modern redevelopment maintains the tenement style.
Don’t miss the statue of Bud Neill at the corner of Woodlands Road and Woodlands Gate. Woodlands is also home to the Arlington Baths Club. Once, Burnbank Park was situated on what is now Barrington Drive. It was the home of the Caledonian Cricket Club. Even Rangers F.C. played here from September 1875 to March 1876.
As you explore Woodlands, think about its past. Picture the watermill and cotton mill that once defined this area. Imagine the students and residents who bring life to Woodlands today. Woodlands offers convenient public transport. Kelvinbridge and St George’s Cross Subway stations are nearby. Numerous bus routes run along Great Western and Woodlands Roads. Whether you’re a resident, student, or visitor, Woodlands invites you to discover its unique character. Take a stroll through its streets and experience the blend of history and modern life. Woodlands is a great Glasgow neighborhood.
