Nestled between the Defensible Barracks and the Officer’s Barracks, its history is interwoven with Gibraltar’s military legacy. Built before 1738, initially known as the Five Gun Battery, it was incorporated into the older Spanish coastal wall constructed by Charles V. Imagine those early days, with just five embrasures facing southeast towards Europa Point and two more facing the Hutment Battery to the northwest. The battery’s location was strategically essential, covering the approaches to the vital harbor. Over time, Woodford’s Battery grew, adding more guns and embrasures. By 1859, it boasted nine guns, a testament to its evolving role in Gibraltar’s defense. The battery continued to adapt, housing a variety of artillery pieces until 1892. Its name, a tribute to Field Marshal Sir Alexander George Woodford, governor of Gibraltar from 1836 to 1843, further connects it to the individuals who shaped its destiny. During World War II, Woodford’s Battery played a different but equally crucial role. Instead of cannons, it housed a defense electric light, piercing the darkness to illuminate potential threats.
