From the depths of time, Woodeaton Quarry emerges. It whispers tales of a Jurassic world, a time long before humans walked the earth. Woodeaton Quarry isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a window into the Middle Jurassic, around 167 million years ago. This unassuming site holds one of the most complete Bathonian sections in Oxfordshire. Woodeaton Quarry has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It spans 7.3 hectares. The exposed rock sequence here tells a story of ancient seas, teeming with life. The layers of Chipping Norton Limestone, Sharp’s Hill, Taynton Limestone, Rutland, White Limestone, and Forest Marble formations each hold clues to a different chapter in this prehistoric narrative. Imagine the shelled creatures and marine life that thrived here. The site is described by Natural England as “of great palaeontological and sedimentological interest.” Woodeaton Quarry isn’t just a place of scientific significance. It’s a place of wonder. It connects us to a distant past, reminding us of the vastness of time and the constant changes that shape our planet. The quarry is a testament to the power of nature and the secrets it holds, waiting to be unearthed by those who seek them.
