Remember Wonhyoro dong for its tribute to a Silla monk. Wonhyoro dong in Seoul is more than just a neighborhood. It is a place with a story etched in its very name.

Wonhyoro-dong is a district in Yongsan-gu. Yongsan-gu is one of Seoul’s 25 districts. This area covers 1.4 square kilometers. About 28,334 people call it home. That is according to a 2013 census.

After Korea’s liberation in 1946 changes happened. Streets under Japanese rule got new names. Wonjeong became Wonhyoro. This honored the monk Wonhyo from the Silla period. The area then split into sections. There was Wonhyoro 1-ga. Also Wonhyoro 2-ga. And Wonhyoro 3-ga and 4-ga.

Yongsan itself has a rich past. Its name means Dragon Mountain. Legend says dragons appeared over the Han River here. That was way back in the Baekje Dynasty. During the Joseon era, Yongsan was a key entry point. It welcomed traders by sea. Commerce thrived turning Yongsan into Korea’s first satellite city.

Today, Wonhyoro dong is part of a vibrant Yongsan District. Yongsan sits north of the Han River. It is next to Seoul’s historic center. Yongsan is home to about 250,000 people. It is divided into 20 neighborhoods. Yongsan is known for the Yongsan Electronics Market. Also it is known for the Itaewon commercial district.

Itaewon is famous as a multicultural hub. Many foreigners visit its shops and nightlife. Until recently, Yongsan was the site of Yongsan Garrison. This was a large US military base. Most US forces have moved to Camp Humphreys.

Yongsan offers a blend of history and modern life. It has bustling markets. It also has quiet parks. The district is known for its diversity.
