Considering a bridge that whispers tales of rapid growth and unexpected turns? That’s Wonhyo Bridge. It stands before you now. It gracefully arcs across the Han River. This bridge links Yongsan-gu and Yeongdeungpo-gu.

Wonhyo Bridge wasn’t just another construction project. It was the 13th bridge to span the Han. Its completion in 1981 marked a significant step in Seoul’s development.

Construction started in July 1978. Just over three years later, in October 1981, Wonhyo Bridge opened to traffic. A mere two months later, toll fees were introduced. Imagine the surprise of commuters. Wonhyo Bridge was the only bridge with a toll. Many drivers chose other routes. They avoided the extra cost.

The toll revenue barely covered the cost of streetlights. It was a financial burden. Then, an unexpected act of generosity occurred. In February 1983, Dongah Construction donated Wonhyo Bridge to Seoul. The city removed the toll gates. Traffic flowed freely.

The Wonhyo Bridge’s story took another fascinating turn. It became a film set. Director Bong Joon-ho chose it for his 2006 movie “The Host”. In the film, a creature lurked beneath the bridge. The main character’s daughter was kidnapped there. The bridge’s sewer-like underbelly and dynamic structure added tension to the scenes.

Wonhyo Bridge is more than just concrete and steel. It connects districts. It tells a story of tolls, donations, and even movie monsters. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s ever-evolving landscape.

So, as you stand here, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. Think about the traffic. Think about the film crews. The Wonhyo Bridge is a vital artery in Seoul. It is also a stage for real-life dramas and cinematic thrillers.
