Is it possible to imagine a place where pandas roam freely? Here at Wolong National Nature Reserve, that dream becomes a reality. This is no ordinary zoo. Wolong offers a natural environment for these amazing creatures.
Wolong is located in Wenchuan County. It is about 80 miles from Chengdu. The Wolong National Nature Reserve is the earliest, largest, and best-known panda reserve in China. It was established in 1963.
Before a catastrophic earthquake in 2008, people thought of Wolong as the Hometown of Giant Pandas. More than 100 pandas once lived here. That was over 10% of China’s total panda population. The earthquake caused severe damage. The Hetaoping Panda Center was badly destroyed. Most pandas were moved to Bifengxia Base.
But Wolong has been reborn. With help from Hong Kong, the Shenshuping Panda Center was built. It opened in 2012. Pandas have been moved to their new home in batches. The Shenshuping Panda Center began receiving visitors in 2016. Today, over 90 pandas live here.
The Wolong National Nature Reserve is part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The climate here is warm and humid. It is perfect for bamboo growth. Bamboo is a panda’s favorite food.
Wolong is also known as a “Bio-gene Bank”. It has a wide variety of animals and plants. You may see red pandas or golden monkeys. You might spot white-lipped deer. Precious plants like yew and beech also grow here.
Unlike regular zoos, pandas are not kept in cages here. You might see them while driving or walking. The reserve has different zones. There is a Baby Panda Zone. There is also a Sub-adult Panda Zone. And a Grown-up Panda Zone. You can also find a Breeding Zone and Wildness Training Zone. Watch pandas walk slowly. See them romp happily. Observe them eating bamboo. They might even climb a tree for you.
The natural scenery here is stunning. You will see bamboo groves. Wolong is special because it is natural and less commercialized. There are no huge crowds. You will find hills, streams, and fresh air. And of course, adorable pandas.
