Haven’t you always wanted to step into a real-life panda paradise? That’s what awaits you at Wolong National Nature Reserve.
Wolong National Nature Reserve is more than just a reserve. It is a sanctuary for China’s beloved giant pandas. Established in 1963, Wolong is the earliest, largest, and best-known panda reserve in China. It is located in Wenchuan County about 130 kilometers from Chengdu.
Before a disastrous earthquake in 2008, Wolong was known as the Hometown of Giant Pandas. Over 100 pandas lived here then. That was more than 10% of China’s total panda population. The earthquake damaged the Hetaoping Panda Center. Most pandas were moved to Bifengxia Base.
But don’t worry, the pandas have returned. Thanks to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, a new panda center was built. It’s called Shenshuping Panda Center and opened in 2012. Now, over 90 captive pandas call it home.
Wolong is a special place for pandas. It has a warm, humid climate perfect for bamboo growth. Bamboo is a panda’s favorite food. This makes Wolong an ideal place for pandas to live and breed.
But Wolong isn’t just about pandas. It’s also a “Bio-gene Bank.” Many animals and plants live here. You can find rare and endangered species such as red pandas and golden monkeys. There are also white-lipped deer and precious plants like yew and beech trees.
Unlike regular zoos, Wolong National Nature Reserve provides a natural environment for pandas. They aren’t kept in cages. As you walk or drive through the reserve, you might see pandas.
The Shenshuping Base has different zones. These include a Baby Panda Zone, Sub-adult Panda Zone, and a Grown-up Panda Zone. There’s even a Breeding Zone and a Wildness Training Zone. You might see pandas walking around slowly. You might see them playing happily or eating bamboo. Sometimes they even climb trees to entertain visitors.
Besides the pandas, the scenery is beautiful. Luxuriant bamboo groves grow everywhere. Wolong is also less commercialized than other places. You won’t find huge crowds of tourists here. Instead, there are rolling hills, murmuring streams, and fresh air. All this plus adorable pandas and other rare animals.
Want to get even closer to the pandas? You can help clean the panda house. You can carry bamboo for them. You can even cook food for them. It costs about CNY 1,000 for a day, including the park ticket.
