Wolfson Court

Stepping back in time, imagine Girton College yearning for a Cambridge foothold. They found it here, at Wolfson Court. Wolfson Court served as the sole Girton College presence within Cambridge city limits. This annex, nestled behind the original Girton College building, offered a convenient location for students. The architecture was a blend of old and new. The original Wolfson Court building’s exterior, a patchwork of modifications, lacked the charm of its interior. A later extension improved the aesthetic appeal. In 1969, the college acquired the 1.2-hectare site on Clarkson Road for student accommodation, shortening the commute into Cambridge. The initial design by David Roberts and Geoffrey Clarke centered around a series of courtyards. Later, in 1992, Bland, Brown, and Cole added two more open courts adorned with lawns and foliage. The landscape at Wolfson Court matured beautifully. Specimen trees, pergolas, and vibrant plants complemented the architects’ vision. However, the story of Wolfson Court took a turn. Girton College, needing to finance a new accommodation block in Eddington, sold Wolfson Court in 2017. This marked the end of an era for Girton’s presence at this site.
