Did you know this coastline got its name from a hyena? Welcome to Wolfgat Nature Reserve. This reserve holds secrets of the strandwolf the brown hyena.

Wolfgat means wolf cave. The name recalls when brown hyenas roamed here. They lived here until the 19th century. Imagine these animals near the Cape.

In the 1960s an amazing discovery occurred. People found a fossilized hyena den in these cliffs. This discovery cemented the name Wolfgat. The area forever linked to these creatures.

The Wolfgat Nature Reserve protects 248 hectares of unique landscape. It is a place of endangered dune vegetation. Majestic limestone cliffs rise. They offer spectacular views of False Bay.

Declared a reserve in 1986 Wolfgat has history going back over 40000 years. This area is rich in fossils. The reserve protects this heritage.

The Cape Flats Dune Strandveld thrives here. Over 150 plant species call Wolfgat home. Evergreen shrubs grow strong. Flowering succulents add color. Arum lilies stand tall. Daisy species dot the landscape.

Birdwatchers will delight in Wolfgat. Kelp gulls soar above. Black oystercatchers nest along the shore.

But this reserve faces challenges. The invasive Acacia cyclops tree or rooikrans threatens the local vegetation. It spreads quickly smothering native plants. This upsets the coastal ecosystem.

The City of Cape Town manages Wolfgat Nature Reserve. They work with the communities of Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain. Together they protect this natural space.

You can enjoy many activities here at Wolfgat. Picnics are popular with stunning views. Fishing is permitted in designated areas but you will need a permit. Coastal birds provide endless entertainment.

If you are lucky you might even spot a porcupine or grysbok. Remember to stick to designated trails for your safety. Hiking in groups is always recommended.

Schools can book field trips with the education officer. They cater for groups of 30 to 40 learners. Larger groups can join special programs. Coastal hikes and clean-up campaigns are examples.

Wolfgat Nature Reserve is open Monday to Friday. The hours are 07:30 to 16:00. Entry is free. For inquiries contact 021 392 5134 or email wolfgat.naturereserve@capetown.gov.za.

Remember Wolfgat Nature Reserve is more than just a pretty view. It is a place of history. It is a place of unique ecology. It is a place of community effort. It is a place where the strandwolfs legacy lives on.
