What would Nuremberg be without its Wöhrder See? Today this artificial lake is a local recreation area. It stretches for 2600 meters through the city. The Wöhrder See is a relatively new addition to Nuremberg. It wasn’t completed until 1981. Before that, the Pegnitz River flowed through the area in two arms. This created a floodplain that often flooded. The lake has two connected parts. The Unterer Wöhrder See is approximately 1200 meters long. The Oberer Wöhrder See is about 1400 meters long. The Wöhrder See serves several purposes. It helps protect the city center from flooding. It also provides a place for recreation and has eliminated the bomb crater landscape left by World War II. You can enjoy activities like pedal boating and fishing. The upper part of the lake is a nature reserve. You can find many species of birds there. The Wöhrder See is a perfect example of how a city can turn a former problem area into a vibrant part of the city.
