Beyond the typical Dahlem villas lies a surprise: the Wohnsiedlung für US-Offiziere & Dreipfuhlsiedlung. This isn’t just another Berlin neighborhood. It is a piece of 1950s America.

Welcome to the Dreipfuhlsiedlung. Picture a US suburb, not a German one. No fences divide yards. Public and private spaces blend. Built in the 1950s, this area housed American officers. High-ranking officials at the nearby Clayallee headquarters lived here. They felt at home.

The houses were well-equipped. They included built-in closets, fireplaces and parquet floors. Terraces and big windows overlooked the gardens. Simpler officers lived in duplexes on Ripleystrasse. These had carports. More of these homes existed along Clayallee.

The Dreipfuhlsiedlung has a unique style. The architecture differs from Dahlem’s villas. Bungalows became popular in Germany later. American suburbs served as models. Wide driveways and open spaces still define the area.

The German government funded the construction. It used occupation costs. When the Americans left in 1994, the homes went to the government. Federal employees received priority.

The street circles a natural depression. This depression is up to seven meters deep from the Ice Age. In 1928, it became a rainwater retention basin. The American buildings create a distinct architectural zone.

The Wohnsiedlung für US-Offiziere & Dreipfuhlsiedlung included thirty flat-roofed bungalows. These surrounded Dreipfuhlpark. Higher ranks lived here. Twelve duplex houses stood further away on Ripleystrasse. Lower-ranking officers occupied these.

Willy Ehrlichmann, a Berlin architect, designed the duplexes. The bungalows feature garages and open front yards. These were inspired by American designs. The interiors reflected the “American way of life”. Living and dining areas combined with large windows and fireplaces. Bedrooms featured built-in closets and two bathrooms. The duplexes shared a similar open style.

The Dreipfuhlsiedlung is now under historical preservation. Its key features cannot change. After the US military’s departure, most houses became private property. The Siedlung’s unified look remains. A walk through Dreipfuhlpark is worthwhile. The park has a long pond. Originally, there were three ponds. That is how it got its name. They merged in 1928 to form a rainwater basin.

Moving into the Dreipfuhlsiedlung meant leaving old Berlin behind. Friends traded high ceilings for a 1956 bungalow. The area has open lawns instead of fenced gardens. The houses feature pastel facades, steel doors and large roofs. The 1957 Interbau exhibition proudly presented the bungalow design.

Imagine living here. Original wood floors, fireplaces and garden views create a cozy atmosphere. This is the Wohnsiedlung für US-Offiziere & Dreipfuhlsiedlung. It is a blend of American style and Berlin history.
