Woeng Nakhon Kasem might sound charming, translating to “delightful townspeople alcove.” However, it earned its nickname because it was once a hotspot for trading stolen goods. Don’t worry, though! You won’t find any illicit deals happening these days. Today, Woeng Nakhon Kasem thrives as a captivating fusion of old and new. While it might not be as vast or well-known as some other markets in Bangkok, it offers a glimpse into a unique side of the city. Stroll through the maze of shops, and you’ll find an eccentric mix of goods. Some vendors specialize in machinery and metal products, catering to restaurant owners and food vendors. Others offer a treasure trove of musical instruments, from gleaming brass trumpets to traditional Thai instruments. You might even spot a few shops peddling antiques, wood carvings, and statues of Chinese deities. Interestingly, Woeng Nakhon Kasem holds a special place in Thailand’s cinematic history. Back in 1905, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, it hosted Siam’s first-ever cinema, a temporary structure with a simple zinc roof, run by Japanese entrepreneurs.
