Completed in 1930, the Wittpenn Bridge stands as a testament to a bygone era. It connects Jersey City and Kearny, spanning the Hackensack River. This vertical lift bridge, initially designed with two 10-foot lanes in each direction, served as a vital artery for Routes 139 and 1&9T to the east, and the New Jersey Turnpike to the west. The Wittpenn Bridge isn’t just a steel and concrete structure. It’s a gateway. It’s a story of progress and transformation. The original Wittpenn Bridge, with its 2,169-foot length and 35-foot clearance above mean high water, bore witness to countless journeys and the evolution of the surrounding landscape. Imagine the ships passing beneath its raised lift span, a 100-foot clearance allowing safe passage. Picture the bustling traffic navigating its four narrow lanes. By 2005, the bridge was raised an average of 80 times a year to accommodate marine traffic, a testament to its dual role in facilitating both land and water transport. The bridge’s namesake, H. Otto Wittpenn, a former mayor of Jersey City, surely couldn’t have envisioned the scale of its impact. The Wittpenn Bridge also became a critical link for nearly 50,000 vehicles daily, including approximately 2,000 trucks. The Wittpenn Bridge, despite its vital role, eventually showed its age. The decision was made not to renovate but to replace. A new Wittpenn Bridge, rising 70 feet above the Hackensack River, was constructed just south of the original. This new bridge, with its wider lanes, shoulders, and pedestrian sidewalk, represents a significant upgrade. It addresses the increasing traffic demands and safety concerns of modern times. The new Wittpenn Bridge carries not just vehicles, but also the East Coast Greenway and the Meadowlands Connector, biking and walking trails connecting communities and promoting alternative modes of transportation. The original Wittpenn Bridge was demolished in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of service. The new bridge stands as a continuation of that legacy. A symbol of progress and connectivity, linking communities and facilitating the flow of life across the Hackensack River.
