What secrets lie beneath our feet here at Witham’s Cemetery? This isn’t just a plot of land. It’s a historical tapestry woven with stories of soldiers diplomats and everyday lives cut short.

Welcome to Witham’s Cemetery also known as the Officers’ Cemetery and Sandpits Cemetery. This place holds the remains of people who shaped Gibraltar’s history. It also holds the remains of their families.

Imagine this cemetery in the 19th century. Yellow fever epidemics swept through Gibraltar. Witham’s Cemetery became the final resting place for many victims. Over 20% of the graves belong to children. This paints a stark picture of the era’s harsh living conditions and limited medical knowledge.

Witham’s Cemetery got its name from Captain Witham. He was a British officer in the 18th century. He was known as a spirited gentleman.

Look around. Notice the various states of the tombs. Many have been lovingly restored. For years Witham’s Cemetery suffered from neglect. Vegetation overgrew the area. Tombs deteriorated. Thankfully the Gibraltar Heritage Trust stepped in. Since 2015 volunteers have worked tirelessly. They cleared paths rebuilt graves and pieced together broken inscriptions.

Among those interred here are significant figures. There are servicemen diplomats and even a High Court Judge. Sir Arthur Cochrane rests here. He was the Attorney General and later Chief Justice of Gibraltar. He presided over the Vice Admiralty Court. The court investigated the mysterious Mary Celeste case. The ship was found abandoned at sea.

Also interred is Sir John Home Bart. He was the 9th Baronet of Blackadder. He died sailing home in 1849 at the young age of 20.

Intriguingly Witham’s Cemetery also holds the graves of a few Catholic priests. These priests often clashed with the Catholic establishment. One such priest was Fr John Baptist Zino. He served as Vicar Apostolic of Gibraltar. He resigned in 1839 due to disagreements. Another was Joaquim de Menezes e Ataide Archbishop of Madeira and Bishop of Elvas.

Take a moment to reflect on the lives represented here at Witham’s Cemetery. Consider the challenges they faced and the contributions they made. This cemetery is a tangible link to Gibraltar’s past. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage.
