Does this bridge whisper tales of a bygone era? This is the Wisukam Narueman Bridge. It is a historic bridge in Bangkok. The Wisukam Narueman Bridge lies on the border of Bang Khun Phrom and Dusit districts.

King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V, ordered its construction. He wanted it to span the Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem canal. The Wisukam Narueman Bridge was intended to connect to Prachathipatai Road. The bridge’s name translates to “The Bridge was Built by Vishvakarman”. It opened in 1901.

Initially, the Wisukam Narueman Bridge had an iron structure. It also featured a wooden pavement and cast iron balustrade. However, time took its toll.

In 1967, the Wisukam Narueman Bridge underwent significant restoration. It was expanded and transformed into reinforced concrete. The concrete balustrade now bears a slightly different name. It reads “Witsukam Narueman”. Notice the spelling variation. The year of restoration, 1967, is also inscribed.

The Wisukam Narueman Bridge is more than just a crossing. It shares its distinction with other bridges. These bridges bear names of deities. Others include Thewet Naruemit Bridge, Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge, Thewakam Rangrak Bridge and Jaturapak Rangsarit Bridge.

The Thewakam Rangrak Bridge also crosses the Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem. King Chulalongkorn ordered its construction as well. It was built in 1899. It links Thanon Talat with Thanon Plai Talat. Today, that is Nakhon Sawan Road. The opening ceremony occurred on November 15, 1900. Thewakam Rangrak Bridge translates to “The Bridge Created by Thewakam”. Thewakam is a deity in Thai faith. He is similar to Ganesh in Hinduism.

The Wisukam Narueman Bridge stands as a testament to Bangkok’s rich history. It connects not only places. It connects eras. It reminds us of King Chulalongkorn’s vision. The Wisukam Narueman Bridge is a bridge built by a deity. It is a bridge of time.
