The word WirWir whispers secrets. It stands before you a former brothel. Now a vibrant art space.
This is WirWir in Berlin Neukölln. It occupies a 49 square meter space. Its name is a playful twist. The Turkish slang for brothel vir vir. A slight alteration yields WirWir meaning we we. This reflects the collaborative spirit of the space.
WirWir is more than just a gallery. It’s a hub for community. Artists from all over the world have participated. They’ve used it for exhibitions. They’ve also held workshops and performances. Think collaborative artist walks. Imagine a parade or demonstration.
Adrian Schiesser and April Gertler founded it in 2021. They created a space for experimentation. They wanted to push boundaries. They wanted to create multiple access points to art. Their vision was community engagement. They wanted to spark a dialogue about the neighborhood’s development.
One unique project involved Uli Aigner. She created one million ceramic vessels. She lent WirWir her Territorial Claim project. This included 206 vessels. Each one represents a UN member state.
