High above Regensburg’s rooftops lies a treasure a landscape steeped in history and brimming with secrets. Welcome to the Winzerer Höhen.

For centuries these hills have witnessed the ebb and flow of time. From Roman vineyards to a bustling silk farm the Winzerer Höhen tell a rich tale. Imagine the sun-drenched slopes heavy with grapes. Roman settlers toiled here transforming the landscape for their wine. The name itself Winzerer Höhen meaning Winemaker Heights is a testament to this early industry.

The medieval period saw a different kind of activity. In 1259 Duke Ludwig the Strict erected Burg Landskron a castle meant to control trade and threaten Regensburg. However the city successfully bought its freedom and promptly destroyed the castle. The Winzerer Höhen remained a productive area however with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. Regensburg’s famous Baierwein flourished here.

The Thirty Years War brought devastation. The Winzerer Höhen became a strategic military position. Cannon fire from these very slopes rained down on Regensburg. The vineyards and much of the area were reduced to rubble. The subsequent deforestation damaged the microclimate making wine cultivation difficult.

But the spirit of the Winzerer Höhen persevered. Following the war summer cellars for beer sprang up along with beer gardens. Even today street names and tavern signs still whisper tales of the lost vineyards. Vegetable farming took over. Winzer and Kager are now known as Regensburg’s garden providing fresh produce.

In the early 19th century King Ludwig I attempted to revive a different industry silk production. A mulberry tree plantation was established here. The Seidenplantage silk farm thrived for a time even holding a silk exhibition in 1838. Its buildings survive today transformed into a wellness center. A lone mulberry tree remains a silent witness to this ambitious venture.

Eventually the ambitious silk production failed. Whether it was the climate or disease that proved fatal is unclear. The attempt highlights the resilience of the Winzerer Höhen adapting to economic shifts.

In 1872 the Verschönerungsverein Regensburg the city’s beautification society stepped in. They reforested the hills creating the parkland that we see today. The Winzerer Höhen have since become a beloved recreational area for Regensburgs citizens. Its trails crisscross the hills offering scenic views of the city below. From the slopes you can admire the city spread out like a tapestry beneath you. Sledding in winter and hiking in summer the Winzerer Höhen continue to attract visitors. The area remains a testament to its remarkable history. It is a place of beauty that blends nature with the echoes of bygone eras.
