“Remember John Winthrop.” That’s the name echoing through Winthrop Square. This square bears his name to honor his significant role in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Winthrop Square sits in Boston’s Financial District. It lies snugly between Otis Street and Devonshire Street. You will find it just south of the Old State House.

Notice One Winthrop Square. This building inspired the square’s design. The columns on its facade influenced the paving pattern. Granite strips define seating areas and walkways.

For 44 years, Winthrop Square was home to a statue of Robert Burns, the Scottish poet. In 1975, the statue was moved from the Back Bay Fens. It returned to its original spot in 2019.

The Boston Flower Exchange once operated near Winthrop Square. In 1913, they opened a flower market at the corner of Otis Street. This area was known as the Wholesale Flower District.

“The Atlantic Monthly” once had its offices in Winthrop Square. The magazine was located at 220 Devonshire Street. It was established in Boston in 1857. Later, James R. Osgood and Company took over “The Atlantic Monthly.” They inherited the office location in Winthrop Square.

Houghton, Osgood and Company were publishers based in the square. That was in 1878.

In the early 20th century, the Boston American newspaper had its pressrooms here.

Consider the changes Winthrop Square has undergone. A study in 2003 considered widening the square. The goal was to improve traffic flow.

Today, there is a plan to revitalize Winthrop Square. The project aims to expand pedestrian space. Sculptural stone planters and trees are planned. A dynamic water feature will add year-round interest.

The revitalized Winthrop Square will connect to “The Connector.” This is a 13,000-square-foot urban space. It will feature retail, restaurants, art, and social events. This new energy will transform Winthrop Square into a vibrant public space.

Think of Winthrop Square as more than just a square. It is a meeting place. It’s a place where history, design, and modern life blend. As you leave Winthrop Square, remember its layers of history and its promise of a vibrant future.
