A shimmering wave of LED lights. That’s how I first saw the Wintergarden. It pulses every night. A breathtaking spectacle right here on Queen Street Mall.

This isn’t just any shopping centre. Wintergarden has a story. It began life as the Wintergarden Theatre. A grand cinema in the 1920s. It was a Brisbane landmark. The theatre even had a Wurlitzer pipe organ.

In 1981 it was demolished. The Wintergarden we see today replaced it. It opened in 1982. Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen himself cut the ribbon. The timing was perfect for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games. The new Wintergarden was meant to be a retail hub.

The initial design was brilliant. It had three levels of shops. It also had a carpark. Imagine Brisbane’s first food courts. A true innovation.

Then came stage two in 1987. This added more shops. It included a groundbreaking 24-hour restaurant. The Hilton Hotel opened in 1986. It provided top-tier accommodation for the 1988 World Expo.

In the 2010s Wintergarden underwent a massive transformation. A $100 million makeover. The exterior got a spectacular upgrade. A whimsical 90 metre long metal fau00e7ade. This fau00e7ade is studded with 24000 LED lights.

Today Wintergarden houses many flagship stores. Mecca Maxima and Seed are here. Unique boutiques like Sheike and Peter Jackson also reside here. The leisure level boasts Grill’d Strike Bowling and a Goodlife Health Club.

The Wintergarden’s journey is one of transformation. It shows Brisbane’s growth. From a beloved cinema to a vibrant shopping destination. Its LED-lit fau00e7ade is a symbol of the city’s modern energy. A captivating sight indeed. It’s a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. It continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Brisbanites.
