Ah, the story of the Windsor Mosque! Did you know its roots stretch back to the mid-20th century?

Muslims began settling in the Windsor-Essex area. By 1960, several families united. They purchased a house on Wellington Road. This house became Windsor’s first mosque.

The community flourished quickly. By 1963, it grew to over 3,000 Muslims. These Muslims came from 19 different countries. The original space was soon too small. Leaders started seeking long-term solutions.

In 1965, the Canada-US Auto Pact boosted employment. Immigration increased. Windsor began to take shape as we know it today.

Construction began on the current Windsor Mosque in 1991. It stands at the corner of Dominion and Northwood. People worked hard to bring this dream to life. Their contributions set an example for all.

From 1991 to 1993, an addition was built. Surendra K. Bagga Architect Inc. was the local firm behind this project. The older section then became the An-Noor School. This was a private Islamic school founded in 1993. The school later moved to Janette Avenue. Since then, the mosque has had minor additions, including a mortuary.

The Windsor Mosque is built with concrete and brick cladding. A minaret stands at the northeastern corner. A gold dome graces the newer section of the mosque.

In the spring of 2023, more construction began. Five residential buildings rose across from the mosque. Each building holds six apartments. There are 36 parking spaces in total.

These 30 apartments are spacious. They range from 1250-1300 sq ft. Large windows face the mosque. Each apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Elevators provide easy access for seniors.

The Windsor Mosque stands as a testament to faith and community. It serves as a place for prayer, reflection, and unity. Its history reflects the growth of Islam in Windsor. It continues to evolve with the needs of its community. The Windsor Mosque honors its past. It embraces the future with open arms.
