A 1933 structure. That’s the Windmill Point Light. Right here before you stands a testament to maritime history. This unassuming lighthouse is much more than just a beacon. It guards the confluence of the Detroit River and Lake St Clair. It guides ships safely through these waters.

The Windmill Point Light’s story begins much earlier. In 1838 a different lighthouse marked this spot. It was built thanks to a $5000 Congressional appropriation. John Martin a War of 1812 veteran became its first keeper. He was more than just a light keeper though. He also served as a Michigan representative after statehood in 1837. A fascinating dual life for a man of the sea.

Over the years the lighthouse evolved. The original structure proved inadequate. In 1873 the Lighthouse Board requested a replacement. They stressed the light’s importance for commerce on the Great Lakes. Congress agreed. A new tower was built in 1875. It was eighteen feet west of the original. This new lighthouse boasted a conical tower fifty-seven feet tall. It was connected to the keeper’s dwelling by a covered passage.

Further improvements followed. In 1890 a concrete seawall was added. An oil house and a new fence improved the station. Range lights were added in 1891. These lights marked the channel between Windmill Point and Belle Isle. These were replaced by steel towers in 1907. Then by electric lights in 1919.

Then came 1933. The present lighthouse was built. The description from the Lighthouse Service Bulletin is quite technical. It highlights the octagonal concrete base and the 33-foot steel tower. The 12000 candlepower light guides vessels. It uses a sophisticated system of lenses and lamps.

Today Windmill Point Light stands in Mariner Park. The area is popular with fishermen. The lighthouse itself remains a poignant reminder of the past. It is a symbol of navigational safety. It represents the dedication of generations of lighthouse keepers. It is a silent sentinel watching over the Detroit River.
