Nestled within the serene bushland of Darks Common Reserve lies the unassuming yet significant Winding House Base. This concrete foundation whispers tales of a bygone era, a time when a temporary railway line carved its way through this landscape. The Winding House Base was a vital part of the construction of the present railway line through Glenbrook Gorge. In 1913, engineers embarked on an ambitious project to bypass the problematic Lapstone Tunnel. This new route required navigating the challenging terrain of The Bluff, demanding an innovative approach. Their solution was a temporary railway line. It crossed Darks Common south of Explorers Road, ferrying materials and equipment for the new tunnel. The Winding House Base played a critical role in this endeavor. It housed the winding engine for a funicular railway. This ingenious system allowed materials to be transported up and down the steep escarpment. Today, the rail line itself is gone, reclaimed by nature. Yet, the Winding House Base remains. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who built this vital transportation link. If you look closely, you can almost hear the echoes of the winding engine. You can picture the workers toiling to complete the Glenbrook Tunnel. The Winding House Base is more than just a concrete slab. It’s a portal to a time of innovation and progress in the Blue Mountains, a silent storyteller in the heart of Darks Common.
