Windfern School of Choice

In 1995, Windfern School of Choice opened its doors. It offered a unique path to graduation. Originally known as Windfern High School, this “Lighthouse” guides students toward their future. Windfern School of Choice is a campus of choice within the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. It focuses on helping students graduate and pursue lifelong learning. Windfern School of Choice serves students aged 17-21. These students often faced challenges that delayed their traditional high school journey. Each student’s story is unique. An application process ensures that Windfern School of Choice serves those who will benefit most. The school operates in the former Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Administration Building. Students park at the adjacent Pridgeon Stadium. As an open campus, students can leave at specific times. Classes run from 7:15 am to 4:45 pm. Most students attend between 8:10 am and 2:30 pm. Students have a one-hour lunch break. They often eat off-campus due to limited food facilities at the school. Windfern School of Choice holds two graduations yearly. One in December and another in June. Graduates themselves often deliver the commencement speeches. They audition for a spot on stage. A panel selects the top three speakers. Windfern School of Choice doesn’t have specific feeder schools. It serves as a resource for all traditional high schools in the district. Students apply and go through an admission process. In 2017, Windfern’s principal made headlines. A student was expelled for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. Her protest was against police brutality and Donald Trump’s presidency. Media coverage led to the administration reversing its decision. Windfern School of Choice later relocated. It moved to the former Matzke Elementary School campus. It was renamed The Leonard Brautigam Center. The center continues Windfern’s legacy of small classes and individualized attention.
