Did you know Windaroo was once a rural expanse? It transformed into a residential suburb. Let’s explore its history.

Windaroo is nestled in Logan City. It lies 36 km south-east of central Brisbane. This suburb wasn’t always residential.

The name Windaroo comes from a sugar plantation. It was one of many along the Albert River in the 1800s. For years, the area was mainly farmland. Dairying was a common practice.

In the late 1970s, things began to change in Windaroo. A rural residential estate was subdivided. It was called Windaroo Acres. Land sales started in 1983.

Windaroo officially became a suburb on 1 June 1981. This marked a new chapter for the area.

Windaroo State School opened in 1992. Windaroo Valley State High School followed in 1994. Interestingly, these schools are now in neighboring suburbs.

In 2000, the Windaroo Australian Peacekeepers Memorial was dedicated. It honors those who served in peacekeeping missions. You can find it in Windaroo Memorial Peace Park.

Until 2008, Windaroo was part of the City of Gold Coast. Boundary changes shifted it to the City of Logan. A vote showed many opposed this change.

The population of Windaroo has changed over the years. In 2011, it was 2,715. By 2016, it rose to 2,827. The 2021 census recorded 2,771 residents in Windaroo.

Windaroo Lakes Golf Club is a local highlight. The 18-hole course opened in 1981. It was upgraded for the 1993 Queensland Open Golf Championship.

Windaroo offers several parks for recreation. Kaiser Drive Park and the Rugby Union Club are popular spots. These provide green spaces for residents to enjoy.

Today, Windaroo maintains a suburban character. It balances residential living with community spaces. The suburb’s past as a sugar plantation and dairy farming area is still echoed through its name.

Windaroo stands as a testament to changing landscapes. It evolved from rural roots to a thriving suburb. Its story reflects Queensland’s growth.
