“Non-sectarian!” That was the cry of Dr. Frank Dyer when he founded Wilshire Congregational Church in 1921. Now known as Wilshire United Methodist Church, it stands as a testament to architectural beauty and a history brimming with controversy and celebrity.

Today, we stand before Wilshire United Methodist Church. Its 144-foot tower rises. It is reminiscent of a thirteenth-century Italian campanile. The church’s design is by Allison and Allison. They blended Italian, Spanish, and Gothic styles. Their masterful use of concrete is evident.

Initially, Carleton Monroe Winslow was the architect. But his plans were scrapped. Allison and Allison stepped in. They were known for work at UCLA. They also designed the Beverly Hills Post Office.

The exterior of Wilshire United Methodist Church largely reflects Romanesque style. The interior leans toward Gothic. The facade and tower draw inspiration. They come from Brescia’s Church of St. Francis in Italy. La Giralda in Sevilla, Spain also inspired them.

Construction began in late 1924. The church opened in May 1925. It had a large auditorium. It could seat 1,400 people.

Dr. Frank Dyer was a controversial figure. He held a jazz concert. It was in the sanctuary. He planned a fundraiser with prizefighter Jack Dempsey. This caused uproar.

In 1928, nearly all pastors voted against Dyer. They cited conduct unbecoming a minister. He was ousted. But Dyer fought to keep his position.

In 1929, All Souls’ Church took over. Dyer’s former co-pastor, Dr. Aked, led All Souls’. Later, in 1934, Wilshire Methodist Episcopal Church moved in. It merged with other churches. The final merger in 1973 created Wilshire United Methodist Church.

This church has hosted celebrity weddings. Actress Ethel Shannon married screenwriter Joseph Jackson here. Jeanette MacDonald and Gene Raymond also wed here. Even Shirley Temple married John Agar at Wilshire United Methodist Church. She was only seventeen.

In 1994, arson caused almost five million dollars in damage. The church was restored the next year. Today, Wilshire United Methodist Church offers services in multiple languages. They include English, Spanish, Korean, and Tagalog. It remains a vibrant center of faith and community.
