Born in Linden in 1906 young Willy experienced a normal childhood. He attended Volksschule and then Fortbildungsschule. He worked as a humble office messenger. He was a clerk. He was a warehouseman. But this unassuming man harbored a powerful heart. In 1930 he joined the SPD the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
Even after the SPD’s banning in 1933 Willy continued his political activism. He bravely participated in the illegal activities of the Socialist Front. This clandestine resistance group dared to challenge the Nazi dictatorship. His bravery however came at a cost. In 1935 the Gestapo arrested him. Wilhelm Bluhm took over his role in the resistance. Willy was sentenced to five years in prison for high treason.
Imprisonment didn’t break his resolve. After his release he worked as a machinist. Incredibly even after being deemed unfit for military service he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1943. Assigned to a penal unit he served until wounded. He ended up a prisoner of war. He was released in December 1945.
After the war Willy continued his fight for social justice. He became the deputy chairman of the Hanover SPD local chapter. He served in the Hanover and Lower Saxony state parliaments. His life was a journey of struggle and resilience.
The city of Hanover remembered this courageous man. In 1989 they named this street Willy-Wendt-Weg. So when you walk along Willy-Wendt-Weg take a moment to reflect.
