Amidst the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, Willowbrook holds a unique story. Willowbrook was named for the willows and the brook that once graced this area. A lone willow tree near 125th Street and Mona Boulevard served as a rancho boundary marker in the 1840s. Imagine Willowbrook in its early days, rich with springs and covered in ryegrass after winter rains. The land was part of the 4,500-acre Rancho Tajauta, granted to Anastacio Abila in 1843. He grazed cattle here as early as 1820.

Willowbrook’s transformation began with the first subdivisions in 1894 and 1895. The Willowbrook Tract was officially recorded in 1903, straddling the new Pacific Electric railway line. The “Big Red Cars” made a stop at 126th Street in Willowbrook, solidifying the name and connecting residents to jobs and city amenities. Deep lots attracted working-class families who cultivated the land, creating a mix of suburban and rural living. This character persisted into the 1980s, even surviving the Watts Riots of 1965, although the community library and other buildings suffered damage.

Willowbrook also boasts the A C Bilbrew Library. Named after a prominent community leader and former deputy to Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, Madame A C Bilbrew was a multi-talented musician, poet, and advocate for youth understanding. The library, designed by architect Vincent Proby, has hosted the County Library’s African American History Month Celebration since 1980, honoring figures like Eubie Blake, Count Basie, and Rosa Parks.

Redevelopment in the early 1980s, driven by the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, shifted Willowbrook’s landscape. New commercial and residential facilities were built, transforming Willowbrook into a community resembling others in South Central Los Angeles. Yet, remnants of its past remain, whispered in the names of streets and parks, and in the memories of longtime residents. Willowbrook stands as a testament to its history, its ability to adapt, and the enduring spirit of its community.
