Imagine Christmas Eve 1912. The County Librarian receives a heartfelt petition. Willowbrook residents longed for their own library. Mrs Belle Jenks generously offered her home. On April 23 1913 Willowbrook Library opened its doors. Fifty books circulated eighteen in just two days.
The Willowbrook Library’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 1950 a new building opened on El Segundo Boulevard. Tragedy struck during the 1965 Watts riots. The library was damaged by fire. Undeterred the community rallied. Donations poured in. The library was rebuilt and reopened in June 1966. It served the community until relocating to its current location in 1987.
This library isn’t just about books. It’s a community hub. It boasts meeting rooms study rooms computers for all ages. There’s even a teen advisory board.
